Club News

From Club President Peter McLaughlin -

With the 2009 - 2010 golf year half over it is timely to bring you up to date with club news and events.

Membership - Members are the life blood of all golf clubs. Many clubs have experienced a decline in their member numbers in recent years. Fortunately Lancefield has not been one of them, thanks largely to a large increase in lady members and, most recently, the introduction of our Cell Scheme to promote new memberships.

A handful of lady members a couple of years ago has grown to 37 today.

Since its introduction from 1 October 2009, the Cell Scheme has brought 35 additional members into the Club. The Scheme is still open and we hope will bring even more new members. As the cost of preparing the course for play have risen sharply, these increases have been critical.

If you have toyed with the idea of taking up or returning to golf there will never be a better opportunity to do so in Lancefield. The opportunity is open to all, and will remain open through the year to allow time for you to organize some friends to take advantage of the discount (up to 45%). Cells introduced from now will attract the discount and a pro-rata reduction for the part of the year that has elapsed since October 1 2009 (the commencement of our Club year).

Further details of how the Cell scheme works can be found here or from John Rebbechi (5429 1918) or David Noble (0417 572 856).

Water - Potentially even more critical to our future is water. In 2009 our dam dropped to its lowest level in memory. Although good spring rains replenished it, the Committee decided to look into the installation of a bore. We obtained a licence to put down a bore near the Clubhouse, and have established that a solid flow of water is available at 150 feet. Decisions will be made shortly on the full development of this new source of water, and how we might finance that development.

Tip Site - The Macedon Ranges Council has let tenders for the rehabilitation of the old Lancefield tip site. At Council's invitation we have indicated where new holes might be located on the site, which we understand will be taken into account in the contouring work to be done as part of the rehabilitation. Council has advised that further development of any new holes on the site will be the subject of separate and later decisions.

Events - The ladies hosted the Mt William Cup on 8 April with a very large field. On Thursday 22 April the ladies staged a Dalhousie 27+ Handicap event at Lancefield (see below for details).

On Sunday 23 May we held our second Annual Vignerons' Ambrose. For results see GUEST DAY & INVITATIONAL RESULTS.

The Lancefield Open was held on the weekend of 29 and 30 May. Details and results are available here.

The Winter $1000 was held on Sunday 18 July. Details and results are available here.

Mens Pennant 2010

On Sunday 16 May Lancefield's A Grade Pennant team defeated Kilmore 4/3 at Broadford Golf Club, making it the best group of scratch players in the Dalhousie District. Unfortunately our handicap team, also in the finals, lost to Kilmore. For all the details see DISTRICT COMPETITION & PENNANT RESULTS.

Junior Golfers

There are exciting developments in Junior Golf at Lancefield.

We have recently seen an increase in the number of juniors taking up golf. Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 16 have been attending the coaching clinics and taking advantage of the expert coaching provided by Trevor Lambert, the 2008-9 Club Champion.

In fact, interest in Junior golf has been sufficient for us to add a Juniors page to this website, expressly for the purpose of highlighting their activities and achievements (click here to access).

Lancefield Golf Club Ladies

From Lady Captain Jenny Colson -

Ladies competition will now be held each Wednesday from 8.30am (previously each alternate week) - see LADIES SYLLABUS for the proposed syllabus for 2010, including dates for Monthly Medal.

Lady members who do not wish to play competition golf are encouraged to come along and join in - we are a very social group and you will be most welcome! We play a different format each week - Stroke, Stableford, Ambrose and 4BBB.

Any lady who would like to play golf but is a bit nervous about the prospect, is encouraged to join us. Club membership details are at MEMBERSHIP. For those new to golf, tuition can be arranged and equipment lent until you can obtain your own. For more details contact Ladies Captain Jenny Colson on 5429 1445 or Helen Dennett on 5429 1849 or 0407 542949.

Any lady new to golf and who would like some assistance in technique (grip, stance, swing, chipping, putting etc) is invited to contact Helen on 0407 542949 who is happy to spend time with you on the course to help you develop the basics.

ooOOOoo

May and June were busy for the Lancefield ladies, with visits to Goonawarra, Seymour, Trentham, Heathcote and Axedale. Quite a few ladies are also playing in our Club competitions on Saturdays, with some good results.

We will be introducing shortly a nine hole competition on Wednesdays for ladies not quite ready to take on a full 18 holes, or who can only spare the time for 9 holes. Come along and see if it suits you, and take part in our luncheon afterwards.

12 May saw the first round of Lancefield's Captains' Trophy, with the winner Sue Cunningham 33 points (handicap 32). The second round was held on 19 May with Ann Bainbridge-Robb the winner with 39 points (handicap 37). Overall winner over the two rounds was Diane Brennan with 65 points (handicap 28).

4BBB Stableford 26 May - Winners were Sue Cunningham (32) and Kaylene Cruise (39) with 41 points from runners-up Sheena Carter (41) and Jenni Vennell (39) with 40 points. Gidia Timmerman was nearest the pin on the 5th hole.

Monthly Medal held 2 June was won by Sue Cunningham 68 (handicap 32) from Ann Bainbridge-Robb 73 (handicap 36).

Cold and wet weather has affected our Wednesday competitions in the last couple of weeks. On 16 June seven of us played Stableford; Lyle Gleeson was the winner on 27 points (handicap 36) and Desma Cook 26 points (handicap 42) runner-up.

On 23 June we held an Ambrose competition, won by Gidia Timmerman, Diane Brennan and Sue Cunningham with nett 72, from Wendy Nicholas, Di Rohde and Sheena Carter (nett 73). We also held a 9 Hole Ambrose for the newer members - this was won by Dee Stewart, Cass Campbell and Jolanta Bennie (nett 78).

We've entered 3 teams in the upcoming Romsey Bowl and have 2 individual entries for Broadford in the week beginning 28 June.

Monthly Medal for July was won by Ann Parker 78 (handicap 40) from Tina Baker 79 (handicap 35). Florence Meyer won the putting (32 putts).
